CORRUPTIONIST- TOWN CLERK

The Chitungwiza town clerk, Mr Godfree Tanyanyiwa is in remand following his arrest over smuggling of the local authority's funds.

Tanyanyiwa is facing charges of 52  counts of criminal abuse and 8 counts of fraud. He is allegedly believed to have took $165 000 from council coffers to buy his house in Chisipite, a low density surbub in Harare. He is also said to have illegally acquired 3 commercial stands using different shelf companies. On top of that the clerk is also believed to have prejudiced his employer of a wooping $170 000 when he bought himself an expensive Toyota Land cruiser V8 instead of buying three vehicles for the local authority.

The issue now is that this is only one top official in the council. So if all top officials in the local authority do the same, what service can they give to the public? These people are just busy feeding themselves at the expense of the public. Is this what they were elected for?

As the public , we are concerned with the ruling the judge will make. Please help us by arresting these corrupt people and putting them in prison. We cannot go on with these kinds of people otherwise as a country we gunning for a disaster .

Currently he is in remand after being denied bail, a noble move by the judge. for more information you can also visit www.newsday.com

BCC LETTING RESIDENTS DOWN

The Bulawayo City Council (BCC) is letting us down please in the maintenance of traffic lights (robots). Is it not that it goes without saying that the local authority has the responsibility to maintain and make sure that all the traffic lights in the city are not faulty. However it seems as if they are forgetting their duty or they are taking it for granted.

I am writing this in particular reference to the ongoing recurrence of road accidents at the traffic lights that are close to the National University of Science and Technology. The traffic lights are at corner
Cecil Avenueand Gwanda Road. At this point road accidents are the order of the day. Recently, on Sunday the 12th of February 2012 there was an accident involving a small vehicle and a haulage truck. This was because the traffic lights were not working properly. Some time last year in December there was also another accident at the same spot due to the same reason.

So in a period of only two months already two accidents have occurred. What more accidents are we going to have at this spot only just because some other people are too reluctant to do their job. We now know these people as those who are not concerned with prevention but are experts in curing. But now they have failed even to mend the robots after a series of accidents. Although cure does not solve the already made damage it is better than to ignore.

There is another example of what I can call sabotage on the part of the BCC. Last year, towards the festive season, a traffic light was hit by a vehicle along
12th avenue
close to Bakers Inn. This traffic light lay on the ground for nearly three months. This is despite the fact that the robot is in the central business district of a city.

This raises the question that, ‘so what does the local authority prioritise?’ Road accidents are claiming a lot of lives but the city council is not making an effort to reduce them. BCC please do something about this. Remember you must serve the public first.

CITY COUNSILS ON THE SPOT LIGHT

What is the purpose of the city councils that we have here in Zimbabwe? Are they doing their work perfectly? Are they serving the public interest first or they are just fulfilling their personal interests? What exactly are they supposed to be doing? Such questions have invaded and impregnated the minds of many Zimbabweans who are living in inhuman conditions due to poor service delivery by their respective local authorities.

First and foremost the people who are in high positions in the city councils were elected by the public. If you were elected, it means that people have got confidence in you. They expect the best from you. This means that you have to prioritise their interests in return. But our fellows in city councils tend to forget this.

Secondly, people are paying their taxes. This means they are expecting high service delivery. They need value for their money.

This problem of poor service delivery has affected all the cities and towns in Zimbabwe. The roads are poor, full of potholes, poor water supply and gabbage is everywhere.

In following posts I will examine what different city councils are doing for their people. If you have a burning issue regarding your city council feel free to share and we can discuss and probably find a way out.
